The Mary Jane arrived in 1939 by train and is now on display in the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum (479 Main Ave.).  She’s a 1939 Century Sea Maid runabout build from Philippine mahogany.  The Mary Jane called Electra Lake (22 mi. north of Durango) home for 80 years before her final landing at the train station where she first arrived. Generations of local families and friends have enjoyed countless hours of fun.  Stop by the DSNGRR museum to see the Mary Jane and many other wonderful exhibits.  It’s fun and free!

The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering happens every September. The Gathering is an exciting, fun-filled event with evening performances and Saturday daytime sessions. Poets and musicians from throughout the country grace our intimate stage at The Strater Theater, performing classic and contemporary poems and songs that will bring tears to your eyes and keep you in stitches.  Associated events include a Cowboy Poetry Train Ride, Chuckwagon Breakfast, and a horseback trail ride in the San Juan National Forest.

The Cowgirls Parade (1919) is just one chapter in the wonderful history of Main Avenue Parades (photo courtesy of Strater Hotel).
